As students, you must have learned that plants and trees help you survive on this planet by giving out oxygen that you need in order to breathe. They also come to great use as sources of food for us, giving us resources such as gum, resin, paper, fruits, and myriads of other gifts. Possibly everyone can appreciate a green leafy plant for containing life, a beautiful rose for being so stunning to smell and to look at, a great tree for giving cool shade to the weary. Moreover, psychological science has actually proven that regular gardening can be highly therapeutic for improved mental health. Here are a few ways gardening can help to enhance mental health.

    The release of good hormones

Gardening can be strenuous work, but it is well worth the sweat because all the physical exercise which comes with gardening, releases a flow of dopamine, a feel-good hormone, into our bodies. Thishelps get rid of excess levels of cortisol (stress hormone).Given this, not only does gardening increase physical fitness, but it also boosts happiness.

    Empowering with asense of responsibility

Maintaining a garden, or even just a single plant, is akin to having a pet animal. The plant may not be vocal or responsive like an animal would be, but taking care of it is your responsibility all the same. For some people, this can be a very maturing experience and dedicating time and effort to caring for another living being is likely to have satisfactory results.

To be a responsible and efficient gardener, you need to know some details about the art. There’s no need to go for an extensive gardening course, information is available on the web, with sites like i garden planting sharing valuable facts, tips and tricks.

    Self-healing properties

Gardening is time-consuming at some stages. Activities like weeding, planting, potting, cutting and pruning require concentration and careful effort, but they also give one some quiet time to think all by themselves, to go over emotions, feelings and past situations that may have been bothering that person for a while now. This is a wonderful chance to clear one’s head and heal oneself.

    Aesthetic delight

Plants and trees are very pleasing to look at, with all their greenery and beautifully shaped leaves swaying in the breeze. Some people, if not most, will find pleasure in seeing, touching and looking after flowering plants and ornamental plants in particular, which are quite pretty and colorful. The visual delight that comes from seeing such beauty is soothing and pleasing to the most tired of minds, and gardening can certainly help this way.

Practicing gardening has been understood to be a relaxing interaction with the natural world, especially important in the high-stress lifestyles we all lead today. In a world dominated by theuse of machines, gardening as an activity brings a welcome change in routine, helping people enjoy some time of their own, fostering a sense of community, and holding the ability to fill one with joy and happiness.
