How to Support a Relative Through Fertility Issues

Fertility struggles can be an emotionally overwhelming and deeply personal experience. If someone in your family is facing challenges with conception, it’s natural to want to help—but knowing how to support them appropriately can be difficult. Here are some thoughtful ways to offer compassion and care without overstepping boundaries.

    Listen Without Judgement

One of the most powerful ways to support a relative going through fertility issues is simply to listen. Let them talk if they choose to, and resist the urge to offer solutions or compare their situation to others. Avoid statements like “just relax and it will happen” or “at least you already have one child”—these can feel dismissive and invalidating. Instead, offer empathy and space for them to express whatever emotions they’re experiencing.

    Respect Their Privacy

Fertility is an intimate and often painful topic. If your relative opens up to you, honour their trust by keeping the conversation private. Avoid asking intrusive questions or discussing their situation with others without permission. Let them lead the discussion on how much they’re comfortable sharing and when.

    Be Mindful of Language

Well-intentioned comments can sometimes be unintentionally hurtful. Phrases like “everything happens for a reason” or “you’re still young” may be meant to comfort, but can come across as dismissive. Try using validating language such as, “I can’t imagine how hard this must be” or “I’m here if you ever want to talk.” Words matter—choose them with care.

    Offer Practical Help

Support doesn’t always need to be verbal. Offering to help with everyday tasks—like preparing a meal, driving them to appointments such as private ivf treatment, or looking after children they may already have—can be an invaluable way to ease some of the stress. Sometimes a thoughtful gesture, like sending a card or dropping off a care package, can say more than words ever could.

    Avoid Unsolicited Advice

Although your intention may be to help, giving advice on treatments, supplements or lifestyle changes can feel overwhelming, especially if your relative is already navigating a complex medical journey. Leave the medical guidance to professionals unless they specifically ask for your opinion.

    Support Their Choices

Whether your relative decides to pursue IVF, consider adoption, or take a break from trying, your role is to be supportive. Fertility paths are deeply personal, and there is no one “right” way forward. Reassure them that you stand by their decisions and that your love and support are unconditional.

    Be Patient

Fertility journeys can be long and filled with uncertainty. There may be periods of hope followed by disappointment. Be consistent in your support, even when progress isn’t visible. A text message to check in or a quiet moment of companionship can make a world of difference.

Supporting a loved one through fertility issues involves sensitivity, patience and a willingness to listen more than you speak. While you can’t fix what they’re going through, you can provide a safe, loving presence that helps them feel less alone in their journey. Compassion, not solutions, is often the greatest gift you can give.
