Whenever it comes to a surgical procedure, it is always recommended to understand all the risks associated with the surgery. Speaking of surgeries, Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgeries performed each year. However, it carries potential risks. Now you must be wondering is Rhinoplasty safe? Read more to find that out:

The purpose of the surgery is to achieve some aesthetic goals, but you must be aware that it carries some risks too. Although most of the procedures are problem-free, you must educate yourself about the side effects and risks associated with the surgery.

    Surgery Risks

The potential risks associated with the surgery include:

    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Adverse reaction to anesthesia
    • Nosebleeds
    • Numbness
    • Swelling
    • Scarring
    • Nerve damage

You should discuss all the possible risks in detail with your surgeon prior to the surgery. A good thing is that if you choose a qualified cosmetic surgeon, it can reduce the risks. Consultation should be used an opportunity for asking questions about the surgery procedure, its benefits, risks and potential side effects. It is best in your interest to follow the instructions of the surgeon pre and post-surgery to avoid any health complications.

    Short-Term Side Effects

You have to bear with a number of short-term side effects post-surgery. Remember one thing, as it is an individualized procedure, the side effects vary from one patient to another. Here take a moment to learn about some of the possible side effects:

    • Pain

As your nose went through alternations, you may experience pain in the nose after the procedure. This discomfort will be minor, but usually, the surgeons do recommend a pain medication.

    • Swelling

You will see swelling around the eyes and nose. It will be noticeable in the first few days of the procedure but after two weeks, it will begin to subside. For some patients, minor swelling may last for up to 6 months after the surgery.

    • Bruising

If you are a sensitive patient, the bruising may be large. It is mostly contained around the eyes and it can last for 10 days. Bruising is not really a sign of a serious complication, but if something seems abnormal, rush to your physician.

Is there any Risk of Scarring?

This is the concern of most of the patients. Yes, there is a little bit of scarring after the surgery but it won’t be that visible. As the incisions are made inside the nostril, the scars will be completely hidden. There are very rare rhinoplasty procedures that create a small incision in the skin to separate the two nostrils. This cut will heal shortly, but it may leave a very little scar, which most people will not notice.

Complete recovery will occur within 6 months after the surgery. Whatever questions you have in your mind, just jot them down so that you can discuss your concerns with the surgeon. He may tell about different types of rhinoplasty and which one would suit your condition well. He will let you know which procedure is the safest. Just be sure that you follow all the instructions pre and post-surgery.
