Crown restoration are common dental procedures performed by dentists. Crowns help to fix many tooth issues like restoring broken teeth, protecting weak teeth, prevent cracked tooth from getting more damaged and support tooth with large fillings. Many people are anxious about crown restoration process but actually it is a simple process.

    Get to know dental crowns

Crowns are prosthetic device that are cemented permanently on an implant or existing broken/cracked/decayed/damaged teeth or tooth. In general, crown replaces the external upper part [crown] of natural tooth, so it is called crown restoration.

When attached, the dental crowns fairfax va will totally encase the damaged tooth portion, which resides over the gum line. As every tooth is different, each crown gets customized, crowns are designed from variety of materials like porcelain, ceramics, resin and gold.

    Dental crowns mechanism

As crowns are tailored, they fit ideally over the top enclosing the tooth. Thus, crown holds and protects what lies beneath it. As the material used to design crown is resilient and durable, they can endure chewing trauma just like natural teeth. After dentist at Oracare Centre Dentaire cements the crown on top of a damaged tooth, it blends well with that tooth.

    Installation of dental crowns

    • Anesthesia is applied to numb tooth and its surrounding area
    • The tooth’s external surface on top side is removed using dental drill and abrasive bur. Room gets created for crown to be positioned.
    • In case there is insufficient tooth left then crown buildup is created, which supports the crown when fitted on top.
    • Tooth impression is taken using putty, paste or digital scanner. Impression is sent to dental lab for designing the crown.
    • As you will get customized crowns from dental lab after 2 to 3 weeks, the dentist will install temporary crown because leaving tooth uncovered is not good.
    • During the second visit, dentist will remove temporary crown and fix in the permanent one.
    • Special cement is used to fasten the crown and allowed to cure until crown firmly gets attached to your tooth.

    How dental crowns help?

    • With crowns the strength, shape, appearance and functionality of damaged tooth gets restored.
    • You can chew again without damaging what is underneath it.
    • Vulnerable physical part gets protected with the crown shield.
    • Structural integrity of mouth and bite gets maintained.

Crowns can last all life, so practice better oral hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth daily, visit your dentist regularly for checkup and professional cleaning.
